Nigeria finishes second in 13th African games

The 2023 African Games, which officially started on March 8th in Ghana came to an end yesterday with perennial champions Egypt once again claiming top spot at the continental sports showpiece event.
Out of the 54 countries in Africa, 53 were in attendance, with only Cape Verde absent from the 13th edition of the Games.
Team Nigeria dominated the athletics event, claiming an amazing 11 gold, six silver and four bronze, totalling 21 medals.  The 2003 champions on home soil also dominated wrestling and weightlifting events but found themselves in a distant second position to Egypt on the overall medals table.
Leaders Egypt concluded the games with 191 medals of 102 gold, 47 silver and 42 bronze while second place Team Nigeria have 121 medals of 47 gold, 33 silver and 41 bronze.
South Africa are in third place with 106 medals of 32 gold, 32 silver and 42 bronze. Completing the top five are Algeria and Tunisia with 114 and 87 medals respectively.
Weightlifting produced Nigeria’s highest medal haul. The team garnered 32 medals — 16 gold, 10 silver and six bronze medals.
Athletics was Nigeria’s second most productive sport at the Games, with 22 medals won.
Tobi Amusan won her third consecutive African Games gold medal in the women’s 100 meters hurdles. She then anchored the women’s 4×100 meters team to a gold medal. Ese Brume retained her crown in the women’s long jump, while Chukwuebuka Enekwechi reigned supreme in the men’s shot put.
Blessing Oborududu and Odunayo Adekuoroye were pristine as wrestling earned Nigeria 11 medals.
Nigeria won eight gold medals in a day in boxing, while arm wrestling also produced 13 medals.
The next edition of the African Games will be held in Cairo, Egypt, in 2027.
