Court clears former Finance Minister of NYSC violation

A Federal High Court in Abuja today held that presentation of the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) certificate was not a condition for being appointed a minister or elected into a public office.
Justice Taiwo Taiwo who made the clarification while delivering judgment in a suit filed by former Finance Minister, Mrs Kemi Adeosun, held that Mrs. Adeosun did not need the National Youth Service Scheme discharge certificate to take up ministerial appointment.
Justice Taiwo Taiwo stressed that the former Finance Minister was not qualified to have participated in the scheme when she graduated as a Briton from a London university at 22.
The Judge further held that, as at when Mrs. Adeosun formally returned to Nigeria, and became a Nigerian citizen, at over 30 years, she was no longer eligible to present herself for the NYSC scheme.
Justice Taiwo also held that since the 1979 Constitution, which was in force at the time she graduated, did not recognise dual citizenship, she could not have engaged in the NYSC scheme as a British.

Chairman of Emohua LGA

The chairman of Emohua local government council, Dr Chidi Lloyd has vowed to sanitise the despicable situation he met at the council on resumption of duty.

Dr Lloyd, who spoke with our correspondent at Emohua, said he met an over bloated staff strength where ghost workers were receiving salaries repeatedly and vowed to put an end to the practice.

Dr. Lloyd, who denied insinuations that the council fund has been diverted, said staff evaluation exercise is currently being carried out to ascertain the true staff strength of the council and promised that May and June salaries will be paid soon.

Dr. Lloyd explained that his action is not geared toward punishing anyone but to ensure sanity in the council.

Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ)

Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ; Rivers State chapter has advocated the creation of a special desk specifically to handle gender based issues that affect women and girls.

Chairperson of the Association, Mrs. Susan Serekara-Nwikhana made this known when she led members of the Association on a visit to the State Commissioner of Police at his office in Port Harcourt.

Mrs. Serekara- Nwikhana who commended the police for their efforts in reducing crime rate in the state, said women and girls are most vulnerable in the kidnapping and killings in the state.

She however enjoined the Police Command to redouble its efforts in the protection of women and the girl child.

The NAWOJ Chairperson, while calling for mutual understanding with the police, enjoined the Rivers State Police command to treat matters concerning women and girls seriously.

On the alleged ritual killings and sale of human parts in the state, Mrs. Serekara-Nwikhana also appealed to the Police Commissioner to fish out the perpetrators and bring them to justice.

Responding, the Commissioner of Police, Rivers State Command, Mr Eboka Friday assured of his administration’s determination to provide quality service to the people and urged everyone to assist by providing relevant information.

The Rivers State Commissioner of Police promised to look critically at the issues raised by NAWOJ with a view of bringing a lasting solution to insecurity in the state.

PIB Provisions
A former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Prince Chibudom Nwuche, has urged the National Assembly to revisit some contentious provisions in the Petroleum Industry Bill, PIB including the equity percentage for oil bearing communities.
Prince Nwuche who spoke with our correspondent in Port Harcourt, commended the National Assembly for passing the PIB, however emphasized host communities should be clearly defined in the bill while thirty percent profit for frontier exploration, should be reviewed to include oil exploration in other basins.
While calling for an upward review of host community equity in the PIB, the former Federal Lawmaker appealed to youths in the Niger Delta region to allow peace to reign as efforts are being made to address contentious issues in the PIB.
Prince Nwuche who aligned with the position of Southern governors on open grazing, creation of State Police, electronic transmission of election results, also supported the call for the emergence of a president from the southern part of the country in 2023 to ensure equity and justice.
Prince Nwuche asserted that adopting the 1963 constitution will address various issues responsible for agitations in the country.

Niger Delta University (NDU)/Bayelsa

The mediatory meeting at the instance of the Bayelsa State Government between the Governing Council of the Niger Delta University NDU, students’ representatives and other stakeholders, has restored normalcy to the state owned university.

The students of the university had been protesting against the closure of the institution’s portal for payment of school fees and alleged enforcement of compulsory wearing of school uniform by the university authority.

Arising from meetings directed by Governor Douye Diri which were presided over by his deputy, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo in Government House, Yenagoa, it was agreed that the portal for the payment of school fees be reopened.

Other resolutions reached at the meeting to include payment of 70 percent of school fees at the beginning of every semester.

The remaining 30 per cent is to be paid before the commencement of second semester’s exams, while year one students are required to make full payment of all fees to enable them have their matriculation numbers.

It also endorsed the prohibition of indecent and indiscriminate dressing by students, directing all faculties to enforce their respective dress codes and other regulations as spelt out in the 2015 students’ handbook.

Senator Ewhrudjakpo cautioned the students never to resort to violence in agitating for their rights especially when there is room for dialogue.

Federal Government says airline operators must make refund to passengers after a two-hour delay.

The Federal Government says airline operators in the country must refund the full cost of travel tickets to passengers after a two-hour delay.
Minister of Aviation, Mr. Hadi Sirika who made this known while briefing State House correspondents in Abuja, charged air passengers to demand their rights whenever they are being trampled upon by airlines.
According to Mr. Sirika, for domestic flights delayed beyond one hour, the carrier should provide refreshment, and one telephone call, or one SMS, or one e-mail, to inform the passengers about the delay.
The Aviation minister, who said his ministry has started sanctioning some airlines who default on consumer rights, however, urged passengers not to be unruly at airports.

Haitian security forces kill four suspected killers of President Jovenel Moise
Haitian Police Chief says, security forces in the country have shot dead four suspected killers of President Jovenel Moise and captured two others, as the assassination of the President threatens to plunge the crisis-hit Caribbean nation deeper into chaos.
The Police General Director, Leon Charles described the four people killed as mercenaries, stating that security forces were locked in a fierce gun battle with the men who assassinated the president at his home overnight.
The 53-year-old late President, a former businessman who took office in 2017, was shot dead while his wife, Martine Moise, was seriously wounded when heavily armed assassins stormed the couple’s home in Port-au-Prince on Wednesday.
The Haitian ambassador to the United States, Bocchit Edmond, said the gunmen were well-trained foreign mercenaries, noting that they had masqueraded as US Drug Enforcement Administration agents as they entered the assassinated President guarded home under cover of darkness.
