POLLUTION CLAIMS MAN’S LIFE IN IBAA COMMUNITY

A native of Ibaa in Emuoha Local Government Area of Rivers State, Mr. Princewill Chukwure has called for justice over the death of his father, late Mr. Samuel Chukwere which he alleged died from strange ailment that might have occurred as a result of pollution from oil exploration in the area.

Mr. Chukwure who made the call during the presentation of Ibaa environmental report, alleged that the people of his community have been harassed and deprived of healthy living due to oil exploration.

In a “Save our Soul” message during the presentation of Ibaa Environmental Report, said repeated efforts to get the attention of the Multinational to stop Oil exploration in the area, was met with heavy security presence, each time they visited.

Presenting the Ibaa Environmental Study Report, an Environmental Chemist, Mr. Fortune Uchenna, an Ecologist with the Rivers State University, Dr. Hanson Uyi and an Engineer who is also a Counsellor Representing Ward 5 in Emuoha Local Government Area of Rivers State, submitted that after thorough assessment of the community, the level of pollution in Ibaa, call for immediate remediation activities.

Another member of the team, Dr. Bieye Briggs, who is a Medical Doctor, decried the health hazards which the people are exposed to due to environmental degradation.

Convener of the event, the Director of Kebetkache Women Development and Resource Centre, Chief Emem Okon, however called for unity and objectivity in addressing the concerns of the people of Ibaa.

In an interview, the Nyeweali of Obele Ibaa, Eze Wobodo Jonah, said the Traditional Institution will do all within its ability, to get the issue resolved.
