NDDC SET TO BUILD EMERGENCY SHELTERS IN THREE STATES FOR FLOOD VICTIMS

Managing Director, Niger Delta Development Commission NDDC, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku says two emergency shelters each would be built in Rivers, Bayelsa and Delta States to serve as Internally Displaced Persons Camp whenever flood occurs.

Dr. Ogbuku who made this known during an interactive with Bayelsa Elders Council in Yenegoa Bayelsa State, pledged the commitment of the Interventionist Agency to build a dam in the region to mitigate perennial ravaging flood in Niger Delta region.

As part of the decision to bring all stakeholders on board, the interactive afforded the Managing Director an opportunity to render his stewardship sort of, to the elders of his state and seek their support, imputes and prayers.

Addressing Members of Bayelsa Elders’ Council BEC, Managing Director Niger Delta Development Commission NDDC, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku expressed sadness over the challenge of perennial flood that has consistently affected the region giving its coastal nature.

Dr. Ogbuku told the elders that as an interim measure, the commission would soon commence setting up Emergency shelters in Rivers, Delta and Bayelsa states while a dam would be built after engineering studies to serve as a permanent solution.

While acknowledging the contributions of elders in the development of any state, he advised politicians across the region to tap into the wealth of knowledge of the elders to facilitate rapid development.

Explaining the public private partnership programme of his administration, the Managing Director noted that NDDC would collaborate with international development partners and authorities of different states to execute some landmark projects across the region.

The Managing Director who regretted the state  of East west Road, said that the commission did some remedial  repair works within its scope to make it motorable after it was cut off by the flood.

In his address, the Chairman, Bayelsa Elders Council, retired Rear Admiral John Jonah, who identified infrastructure and development as inseparable, called on statutory contributors to be up to date in their contribution to enable the Interventionist agency fulfill its mandate.

Retired Rear Admiral Jona requested that the commission take up rural electrification in some parts of Bayelsa State, build a secretariat for the Elders Council as well as provide a bus for mobility.

The Elders Council Chairman who was a former deputy governor of Bayelsa State appreciated NDDC for several projects cited in the state and prayed for a successful tenure for the Managing Director.

High point of the occasion was adoption of Dr. Ogbuku as a member of Bayelsa Elders Council.
