CIVIL LIBERTY GROUPS CALL FOR HEATHY ENVIRONMENTAL HABITS

Civil Liberty Organizations within the Niger Delta region of the Country, want government and members of the public to be deliberate in restoring the vigor of the earth.

They made the call at a public forum to commemorate World Earth Day in Port Harcourt.

Drama, dance and poetry were some of the ways used sending the message on the urgent need to refrain from harmful environmental practices.

Poor waste management and activities of oil exploration in the Niger Delta region of the Country has been a point of concern in recent times and has also got the attention of Civil Liberty groups like; Kebetkache Women Development and Resource Centre, Ford Foundation and many more, which gathered in Port Harcourt, to address the issue of environmental degradation in the Area.

Ace Environmentalist, Mr. Nnimmo Bassey, while calling on the Government to formulate policies that would promote healthy environmental habits, pointed that the fight against the menace should be collective.

Board member,   Kebetkache Women Development and Resource Centre, Chief Constance Meju, also decried the impact of environmental degradation on women in the rural area.

Director, Kebetkache Women Development and Resource Centre, Chief Emem Okon, wants an end to acts that devalue the ecosystem.

The gathering had stakeholders from the Niger Delta Region, including some rural women who lamented loss of their farmland, farm produce and much more, to harmful practices, done to the earth.
