Environmental hazards come in different forms and are oftentimes caused by human activities.

A very common environmental hazard in Port Harcourt posed by man is the removal of manholes on drainages leaving it wide open.

The residents are calling on the State Ministry of Environment put measures in place to prevent imminent danger or loss of lives in the uncovered holes.

Environment Correspondent Blessing Ituma completes the report.

The sight of uncovered manholes is common along mile 3 axis of Ikkwerre road in Port Harcourt.

Some of them are being used for open defecation.

The drainages in Ada George road and even the ones in front of the NTA gate are wide open making them danger spots.

A resident of Port Harcourt in mile 3, Miss Thessy Robert told Radio Nigeria that just before the COVID19 outbreak, the drainages were covered with welded iron but was removed during the lockdown.

When it rains, the magnitude of flood along the drains can forcefully wash off whatever it is that falls into it.

Two business owners, Mr. Ikenna Ogu and Mr. Daniel Azu also along mile 3 who alleged that some hoodlums in search of scraps always remove the covers narrated an incident where they helped to rescue a woman that fell into one of the uncovered drainages.

They suggested metal covers with lock for the manholes.

An Environmentalist, Dr Hyginus Oku has called on the Rivers State government to find a solution to the environmental hazard and routine maintenance on drainage systems in the state.

Dr Oku also called for arrest of miscreants who make away with the covers of the manhole.
