RIVERS STATE GOVERNMENT URGED TO PROMOTE USE OF LOCAL LANGUAGES IN SCHOOLS

Rivers State Government has been called upon to encourage trainings that will advance the use of the local languages in schools in the State.

President of the Rivers State Indigenous Language Teachers Association Dr. Ovuchi Agwnu while training about fifty teachers across the twenty three local Government Areas in the State with the Rivers Language Teaching Guide for Basic one to three, decried the situation where Children of the State are taught in strange languages other than their mother tongue.

Dr. Agwnu urged the indigenes of the State and even Private school owners to support the move to protect the rich cultural heritage of the indigenous languages in schools.

Secretary of the Group, His Royal Highness, Eze Ishmeal Nweke called for the employment of more language teachers in the State to ensure that the rich heritage of the languages of Rivers State does not go extinct.

Members of six-man Mother Tongue Committee to handle the language training have representatives across every Local Government Area of the State.
