The Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has reiterated his administration’s commitment to restoring commercial activities in Oron to redeem its ancient natural identity as one of the major marine economic hubs and harness the blue economy potential of the State.
Governor Eno gave the assurances after carrying out an inspection of the ongoing construction of Oron Marine Terminal, Shore Protection, Jetty, Warehouse and Recreational Facility Project site in Oron.
The Governor reaffirmed his commitment towards ensuring the development of the marine terminal with modern facilities to enhance the economic potential of the area, and restore full commercial activities that would boost the economy of the State.
“People will come through the terminal building here, buy their tickets and board the ferry to Calabar.
“Beyond that marine transportation, I want commercial activities back here so that our fishermen can ply their trade. We have cold room facility, dry storage facility and fish drying facility so that that business can thrive. We have to make this place very conducive and lucrative,” he stated.
Assessing the progress of the project, Governor Eno commended the project contractor, MK Construction Ltd, for the speedy realization of the vision, stating that his decision to pay a visit to the site was to inspect the progress of the project, listen to the contractor, and match the architectural design with the physical reality on ground to determine next steps.
He thanked the people of Oron for their cooperation and support for the contractor, describing the project as a treasurable gift to the people, and charged them to protect and take ownership of the project.
“Thank you so much for cooperating with the contractor. This project is for our people here. It is our gift to the Oron people. You know that you are the ones to protect this facility because it is your own,” he said.
The Governor also expressed satisfaction with the quality and pace of work at the 120-metre Ofriyo–Eket Bridge and the 2.5-kilometre dual carriageway connecting Eket and Nsit Ubium Local Government Areas.
Governor Eno made this known during a visit to the project site and the Ikot Ekpene Udo General Hospital, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to delivering life-changing infrastructure across the State.
