Chairman, House committee on Education presenting a report

The Akwa Ibom State house of Assembly has urged the state governor, Pastor Umo Eno to step up the number of teachers slated to be employed into the education sector in the state.

The resolution followed a report of the house committee on education on the motion for Urgent need to immediate deployment of teachers to public secondary schools in which the committee chairman, Mr Kenim Onofiok noted that out of the 3,000 people to be employed by the state government, only one thousand slot is for teachers.

Mrs Onofiok who is also the member representing Oron/ Udung Uko state Constituency noted that in response to the directive of the House ,the Committee invited the Head of Civil Service, Elder Effiong Essien for a meeting which he attended and gave explanation on plans by the State Government in regards to employment of 3,000 Staff that was announced by the Governor.

She added that out of the 3,000 Staff to be employed, 1,000 is for educational sector (teachers), 1,000 for Health Sector while the remaining 1,000 is for the Mainstream Civil Service.

The committee recommended that the State Government should employ core subject teachers and also deploy same especially to rural areas in the State.

The house noted that one thousand teachers is insufficient for the education sector, hence the speaker, Elder Udeme Otong mandated the clerk Mrs Nsikakabasi Orok to communicate the decision of the house to the governor, Pastor Umo Eno for necessary action.

Meanwhile, the member representing Nsit Ibom state constituency, Mr Eric Akpan has called on the state government and security agencies to beef up security in the state.

Mr Akpan made the call against the backdrop of the adduction of 13 people from Itu Mbonuso, Ini local government area by people alleged to be indigenes of Arochukwu in Abia State.

Commenting on a matter of urgent public importance brought by the member representing Ini state constituency , Mr Lawrence Udoide, the Nsit Ibom lawmaker emphasized that the core responsibility of government is to protect life and property.

A bill seeking for a law to establish the Akwa Ibom State Council on Climate Change, also passed second reading on the floor of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly.
