The newly elected Chairman of the Guild of Actors, Cross River State chapter, Ambassador Beatrice Akunjom, has expressed gratitude to the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Cross River State Council for being a “critical stakeholder” in the cultural development of the State.

Speaking during a courtesy visit to the NUJ State Council Chairman, Comrade Archibong Bassey, Ambassador Akunjom emphasized the connection between acting and journalism, describing both as channels of storytelling.

She explained, “All we do in acting is still journalism . We tell stories in dramatic and entertaining ways, but at the core, it is still journalism. That is why NUJ is our first critical stakeholder. We cannot go to the next level without the Nigeria Union of Journalists.”

Ambassador Akunjom called for stronger collaboration to reposition Cross River in Nigeria’s entertainment landscape, noting that States like Delta, Enugu, and lmo are currently more visible.

“We want to showcase our rich cultural heritage,” she said. “Cross River has the potential to stand out. NUJ, please believe in us. Bring opportunities, and we will not let you down.”

The Guild of Actors Chairman recalled how Comrade Bassey had endorsed her nomination form when she contested for the chairmanship of the Guild.

“I insisted that no other person would endorse my form except this wonderful woman,” Akunjom said. “Behind my victory is the fact that she moved her pen—very costly, very symbolic, and signed that document. Today, I came back to say thank you for believing in me.”

Responding, NUJ Chairman, Comrade Bassey congratulated Akunjom and her team on their victory at the polls, urging them to put their trust in God as they begin their tenure.

“I know the challenges that come with elections, so for emerging victorious, I congratulate you.

“Everything I do, I commit to God. Proverbs 3:5 says, ‘Trust in the Lord with all your heart.’ If you follow this principle, you will see the Guild of Actors in Cross River State move to another level,” Comrade Bassey advised.

The NUJ Chairman also underlined the importance of working with the media, stressing that the NUJ is a vital partner in projecting the achievements and cultural identity of the State.

“When people sideline the media, I wander where else they will go to. You cannot cook your food and eat it alone. The media are critical stakeholders in the development of Cross River and Nigeria. We will always be here to support you.” she assured.

The visit ended with the presentation of the Guild of Actors Medal to the NUJ chairman in recognition of her role in supporting the new leadership.
