The Nigerian Union of Journalist, Delta State Chapter has denied that Comrade Victor Sorokwu was suspended as secretary of the union following a misunderstanding.
In a detailed breakdown of what happened during the congress held on Wednesday, 29th July 2025, our correspondent reported that the Congress was presided over by the Chairman of NUJ Delta State Council, Comrade Churchill Oyowe, in company of SWC members.
According to the report, the congress started peacefully with the usual formalities but surprisely, Dominic Adewale in an attempt to disrupt the meeting stood on behalf of Prince Ben Okolie , a young investor at the NUJ Press Centre Asaba,to move that the State Secretary of the union, Comrade Victor Sorokwu be impeached over allegation of fraud against Ben.
Dominic said Prince Ben had submitted a petition to the leadership of the union, alleging that the State Secretary, Victor Sorokwu was using the Union’s assets leased to the investor to make money for himself.
The motion was countered by Barth Ozah of Asaba Correspondents Chapel , and seconded by Sam Erhunmwunsee of the same chapel .
This however did not go down well with the likes of Comrade Abel JohnGod of Federal Information Chapel, Comrade Akpokona of Warri Correspondents Chapel along with a few others who resorted to violence, forcibly chasing members from their seats, overturning chairs and tables, and assaulting colleagues that led the counter motion.
The ugly situation became chaotic, and consequently, the council chairman adjourned the meeting for one hour to restore peace and order.
At the resumption of the Congress, some other members took turn to deliberate on the motion and counter motion .
Some others including Elder Eddy Ogwude of Elders and Veterans Council insisted that due process must be followed in addressing cases bothering on fraud while Comrade Monday Osayande of the Ethics and Disciplinary Committee, drew the attention of the Congress to Article 7 titled DISCIPLINE, of the union’s constitution where it provides in Number 2, under Procedure: That where a complaint has been made against a particular journalist, the Journalist shall be notified of such complaint in writing and given at least 21 days notice within which he shall prepare his defense and appear before the Ethics and Disciplinary Committee.
This prompted the Chairman of the council to call for amendment of the initial motion and counter motion moved.
Several moves by the immediate past chairman of the council, and Senior Special Assistant to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori on Media, Comrade Michael Ikeogwu along with Comrade Okies Okpomor to ask the State Secretary, Victor Sorokwu to be suspended over the allegations were futile .
It was agreed that due process be followed, and consequently, the Chairman announced that a committee from SWC would be set up to look into the petition.
