Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has appealed to residents to remain calm amid the ongoing impeachment proceedings initiated by the State House of Assembly.

The governor made the call on Sunday, January 11, during a special church service at St. Cyprian’s Anglican Church, Port Harcourt, to commemorate the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day.

Speaking briefly at the event, which marked his first major public appearance since the fresh impeachment move began last Thursday, Fubara assured the congregation that “everything would be fine.”

He attributed his composure in the face of mounting political distractions to his deep faith in God, explaining that his deliberate silence was a conscious choice.

Recalling his earlier statement at the New Year banquet at Government House, the governor remarked philosophically that “dogs bark when they do not understand.”

Governor Fubara then invited his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu, who had earlier read the first lesson during the service, to address the worshippers.

In her remarks, the deputy governor expressed appreciation to all who attended the solemn occasion.

She enjoined the people to uphold good conduct, echoing the sermon by the Dean of the Anglican Communion, Archbishop Blessing Eyinda, who emphasised that every action would be remembered in due time.

Prof. Odu also called on Rivers residents to continue sustaining the administration through fervent prayers, describing such spiritual support as the strong pillar upholding the government in these challenging times.

The latest impeachment proceedings, the third attempt against Fubara since 2023, were formally commenced on January 8 by the Rivers State House of Assembly.

Twenty-six lawmakers signed the notice alleging gross misconduct against the governor and his deputy, in line with Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

The development has heightened political tension in the state, amid the lingering rift between Fubara and his predecessor, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Chief Nyesom Wike.

Despite the pressure, Fubara and his deputy have largely maintained silence on the specific allegations, choosing instead to focus on faith, unity, and public order during the Remembrance Day observance.

The service also honoured fallen Nigerian heroes and prayed for serving members of the Armed Forces, underscoring the importance of peace and national stability.
