
In commemoration of the Nation’s Democracy Day 2025, the King of Evo Kingdom, His Royal Majesty, Eze Leslie Eke has called on political leaders to prioritize national interest abovepersonal gain.
The Royal father who is also the Chairman, Supreme Forum of Ikwerre Government Recognized Traditional Rulers stressed the need forpartnership between traditional institutions and government at all levels to entrench democratic values, preserve Nigeria’s heritage, and ensure a more united, peaceful, and prosperous nation.
Eze Oha Evo III of Evo Kingdom explained that the power of democracy lies not only in the ballot but in the everyday conduct of leadership and citizenship while stating that Ethnic and religious divisions must give way tounity and common purpose.
“Democracy is not just about elections or politics; it is aboutjustice, equity, and service to the people. As custodians of cultureand conscience, traditional institutions remain pillars of stabilityin a fast-changing Nigeria,” King Eke said.
While reflecting on the significance of the day, which commemorates the historic June 12, 1993, presidential election that was widelyregarded as the freest and fairest in Nigeria’s history, the monarchemphasized the role of the people in sustaining democracy.
“Let June 12 remind us that the struggle continues—not for power, butfor the prosperity and dignity of every Nigerian, We must build bridges, not walls. Ethnic and religious divisions must give way to unity and common purpose,” he stated.
Eze Gbakagbaka noted that Democracy without good governance is a betrayal of those who died for the attainment of Democratic rule in the Nation while encouraging Nigerian youths on civic participation, responsible engagement on social media, and a dedication to peace building.
On the rumoured possibility of lifting the suspension of the Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara on June 12, he said it will be a welcome development given that the people’s hope of democratic values will be rekindled.
