FISHERFOLKS DECRY IMPACT OF CLIMATE CRISIS ON SOURCE OF LIVELIHOOD

Fisher folks in the Niger Delta Region have called on the Government and relevant International Bodies to urgently take steps to mitigate the effects of Climate Change on their source of livelihood.

They made the call at the Fisherfolks People Assembly, held as part of the African Peoples Counter COP 2024.

United Nations Conference of Parties, UN – COPs holds to negotiate climate issues Internationally, but little progress is achieved.

At the Fisherfolks Peoples’ Assembly to the Peoples’ Counter Cops, organized by Kebetkache in Port Harcourt, Fishermen and women from the Niger Delta Region, laments the unbearable condition they face in their fishing profession.

They called for measures to tackle sea piracy, indiscriminate dumping of refuse in the water body, illegal refineries and extractions from big companies causing oil spillage.

Speaking on the Fishing Vocation and Climate Actions, Comrade Stephen Oduware of Health of Mother Earth Foundation, wants indept approach in tackling climate change in Africa.

Director, Kebetkache Women Development and Resource Centre, Dr. Emem Okon, in an interview, called for sincere effort from the Government in addressing the plight of the Fisherfolk, in the face of climate crises.

The Assembly brought Fisherfolks from Delta, Bayelsa, Akwa-Ibom and Rivers States.
