NIGERIAN NAVY HOLDS GOLF TOURNAMENT TO MARK SIXTY-SIX ANNIVERSARY

Sport has been described as a unifying factor. 

The Chief of the Naval Staff, CNS, Vice Admiral Awwal Gambo who made this known during a golf tournament at Sealord Golf Club NNS Pathfinder Port Harcourt, as part of sixty – six anniversary of Nigerian Navy, maintained that Nigerian Navy will continue to promote sport in the country.

“The path of strong, formidable and credible Navy is the clear direction of where Nigerian Navy is headed under my watch.”

“This plan of our Navy, I’m proud to say, remains Robust.”

“Consequently, as Nigerian Navy continues to accomplish giant strides, in our constitutional role of ensuring that the maritime domain is secure, plans are also in Place to ensure that personnel are fit to sustain these achievements.”

“As such, the Nigerian Navy will continue to support sporting activities locally and at International level.”

Vice Admiral Gambo who stressed the importance of physical fitness, charged Naval officers to live up to their mandate of ensuring safety of the maritime domain. 

Similarly the Special Guest of honour, Admiral Promise Fingesi, (rtd) applauded the efforts of the CNS to make Nigerian Navy formidable.

The eighty year old retired Naval Officer who encouraged officers to engage in golf, acknowledge that  playing golf   made him physically fit even at old age.  

The Special Guest of honour who described the experience as a refreshing moment for him, said he would pull other golfers across the state to stage tournaments at the Sealord Golf Course. 

                   “What is important to those of us who have retired and left the service is to find a place to relax and reflect.”

“What I found out today is that Sealord Golf Course is one of the best in the world.”

“Since I am an active member of Elders group in Port Harcourt Golf Club, I will tell them that this place is a good holiday resort, that they can come here at weekends to enjoy themselves.

The veteran Admiral discountenanced the insinuations that golf is only for the rich and called on the youths to embrace the sport and make a living out of it. 

The Commander NNS Pathfinder who doubles as the Patron of Sealord Golf Club, Commander Suleiman Ibrahim appreciated the Chief of the Naval Staff for Choosing Pathfinder as host and promised to make Sealord Gulf Course one of best in the world.

“This event was actually supposed to hold at Port Harcourt Golf Course, but the Chief of Naval Staff decided that the Sealord Golf Course should host the tournament.”

“You will attest that this decision could not have been better.”

“In the last two years, no event has held at Sealord Golf Course.”

“So, getting this place ready for this event was a herculean task.”

“Everything you see here was concluded in the last four weeks.”

Gifts for winners

At the end of the tournament, Commander J O Shuaibu emerged the overall winner of Best Net Navy, with a gross of eighty- one while Lieutenant Commander Jumia Sule won the Best Net category, Ladies Navy, with a gross of one hundred and five.

High point of the event that was attended by top naval officers was presentation of gifts to golfers that distinguished themselves at the tournament.
