Niger Delta women call for clean environment before departure of Multi National Companies
DESIRE LORDSON
Women in the Niger Delta have called on the Federal Government and other relevant Authorities to prevail on the multinational companies planning to sell off their on shore asserts to consortium of investors.
The women under the aegis of Power Up Project in Nigeria, implemented by Kebetkache Women Development and Resource Centre and the allied community-based women organizations in the project sites, have decried the impact of oil exploration on the environment and their livelihood, given their significant role in earning the family’s subsistence income through Agricultural activities.
The women while reading out the Statement through a representative, called for the restoration of the environment by the Multinational Companies which they say includes Shell, Agip and Exon Mobil, before divestment.
Two of the women, Dr. Patience Osarojiji of Eleme Local Government Area in Rivers State and Pastor Glory Thomas from Ibenno in Akwa Ibom State in a separate interview with Radio Nigeria, lamented the hardship they are facing from the effect of oil exploration in their areas.
The women urged the Government to come to their aid in ensuring that the Multinational Companies clean up oil impacted communities according to the recommended standard before leaving.
