The recent debate sparked by Peller’s interview with Masters degree holders has reignited questions about the true value of education. Some voices claim that education is “a scam,” using examples of highly educated people struggling to find fulfilling work .
Though, I didn’t want to say anything but, this perspective, while emotional and attention grabbing, misses the deeper power of education and how it should truly be approached in the 21st century.
Education is not just about earning degrees or finding jobs. Its real value is in teaching people how to think, not merely what to think.
An educated person stands out not because of a certificate, but, because their mind is trained to learn, question, and innovate. Education gives people the tools to solve real world problems and make informed decisions that affect societies. But, the Danger is the narrow Focus. While education is powerful, it should not be a cage.
Too often, children are pressured to chase academic success at the expense of self discovery which is not too good. Parents must recognize that each child is unique, and every child has talents that may or may not fit into traditional academic molds.
To me, Parents should encourage their children to explore their passions be it music, sports, science, art, or entrepreneurship. Support academic pursuits, but, don’t allow grades to become the only measure of worth or future potential.
The future does not belong to those who have only memorized facts, nor to those who rely only on raw talent. True success comes from combining formal education with the pursuit of unique talents and passions. When these forces work together, young people are equipped to start businesses or change industries.
Many successful individuals have leveraged their education as a foundation while pursuing their talents and building impactful businesses. For instance, Uche Pedro, who holds a master’s degree from Harvard, founded BellaNaija, one of Africa’s most influential digital media companies, blending educational insight with a deep understanding of media and culture. Danica McKellar, a mathematics graduate from UCLA, uses her education to author bestselling math books while pursuing her career in acting. So also, Richard Nyong,a graduate of Economics from the University of Port Harcourt, Richard became one of Nigeria’s top real estate entrepreneurs. He founded Lekki Gardens Estate and credits his educational background with equipping him for business innovation and leadership
These examples illustrate how education, when coupled with talent and determined entrepreneurship, can lead to remarkable success.
My candid advice for Parents: Encourage Both
- Let children explore beyond the classroom. Help them find passions in sports, arts, science, or community service.
• See education as a foundation, not a cage. Guide your children to view school as a starting point, not the only road to success.
•Nurture resilience and creativity. The future belongs to adaptable minds that can connect knowledge with passion.
In Conclusion, Education alone is not enough nor is talent without discipline. But together, they are a winning combination. Encourage young people to seek degrees and certifications, yes, but also to follow their interests, build skills outside academics, and be unafraid to innovate or try new things. When education and talent work side by side, the boundaries of what is possible expand dramatically.
Education is not a scam when combined with purpose, talent, and continual self discovery, it becomes a powerful force for personal and collective achievement.
A Message to Those Who Felt Offended by the Peller Interview
To everyone who attended Peller’s interview and felt disheartened or offended by any experience note these:
Don’t let temporary setbacks define you. It’s natural to feel disappointed, but your journey doesn’t end with one event.
Start working on yourself. Use this moment for self-reflection and improvement. Work on your strengths, and seek out opportunities for growth both inside and outside formal settings.
Focus on resilience. Remember, challenges can build character and clarify your goals. Let difficult moments propel you forward, not hold you back.
Stay determined and positive. Many of the most successful individuals have faced criticism and disappointment. What sets them apart is the decision to keep striving and believing in themselves.
Always remember, everyone’s journey is unique. Refuse to let any single encounter weigh you down instead, commit to your development and believe in your potential to achieve great things. - Iyabo Osagiede
