The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ, in collaboration with the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, NAPTIP and other relevant partners have taken a road walk across some streets in Calabar to campaign against Trafficking in Persons.

According to a new report from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, UNODC, about seventy-one per cent of all human trafficking victims are women and girls while one third are children.

The 2016 global Report data also says, it found out that women and girls, on the basis of gender, are usually trafficked for marriage and sexual slavery, while men and boys, are also trafficked into exploitative labour as porters, soldiers, and slaves, including work in the mining sector,

To mark the international Day, the Head of Operations, NAPTIP, Cross River State, Mr. Jacob Oba said the walk was timely especially as the World marks the Day Against Trafficking with the 2025 theme, “End the Exploitation” which centers among victims who have been lured innocently into trafficking across different countries and within.

Contributing, a Senior Officer of NAPTIP, Mr. Ikpi ikpi noted that there are five strategies used to curtail Trafficking in Persons, which include Prevention, Protection, Prosecution, Partnership and Policies that must be established to place stringent measures that can discourage trafficking in Persons.

Commenting, the Chairperson of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, Cross River State Chapter, Mrs. Rekpene Uket explained that due to the alarming rate of women and children’s victimization with respect to human trafficking, the Association deemed it fit to join the advocacy campaign in sensiziting citizens on the dangers of trafficking.

The NAWOJ Chairperson called on the government and non governmental organizations as well as individuals to ensure they keep educating communities, and organizing workshops, and online events to spread information about human trafficking.
