Police operatives from the Rivers State Command have invaded Nkpolu Community in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area and arrested scores of youths, women, and men.
The development follows reports that youths in Nkpolu, who were on a “No Drug Abuse” campaign, flogged a policeman and two others allegedly caught using illicit drugs.
The police stormed the community on Tuesday around 4:00 p.m. in about eight vans. They were reportedly led by the same policeman allegedly caught by the youths using illicit drugs.
However, the police in the state said that a man named Nyian reported a case of assault and stealing by the youths of Nkpolu.
Recall that the youths, led by their chairman, Owhondah Chamberlain, had vowed to stamp out drug abuse in their community, noting that the menace was fueling criminality.
Chamberlain stated that the campaign was not targeted at anyone, but was aimed at saving youths from drug use. He noted that the Nigeria Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, was aware of the effort, adding that all the drug sellers arrested have been handed over to the Drug Agency.
The police are yet to speak on the arrest of the youths.
