The campaign against domestic and gender-based violence in Akwa Ibom State received a significant boost with the public presentation of Beyond the Poise, a novel by Mrs. Eme Atakpo that shines a spotlight on the hidden scars of abuse and the resilience of survivors.

Speaking at the unveiling ceremony in Uyo, the Coordinator of the Office of the First Lady, Lady Helen Eno Obareki, called for a united front involving government institutions, civil society groups, faith-based organisations, traditional rulers, and the media to confront the growing challenge of domestic violence and protect vulnerable citizens.

Describing the book as both timely and impactful, Lady Obareki said its launch during Gender-Based Violence Awareness Month sends a strong message that society must move beyond silence and confront the realities of abuse head-on.

She noted that many victims continue to suffer behind closed doors while maintaining outward appearances of stability and happiness, making public awareness and intervention more critical than ever.

Drawing from the story of Lizzy, the book’s lead character, Lady Obareki said Beyond the Poise reveals the painful cycle of abuse, manipulation, and fear that traps many victims. Yet, she added, the novel also celebrates courage, friendship, healing, and the determination to reclaim one’s identity.

The State GBV Management Committee Chair reaffirmed government commitment to enforcing the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Law and strengthening support systems for survivors through counselling, rehabilitation, and access to justice.

She further applauded the author’s decision to channel part of the proceeds from the book launch toward supporting survivors of domestic violence and rape, describing the gesture as a practical demonstration of compassion and advocacy.

Author Mrs. Eme Atakpo said the novel was inspired by real-life experiences of abuse victims and was written to encourage conversations that challenge harmful social norms and inspire action against violence.

The event attracted academics, women’s groups, faith leaders, and advocates who echoed calls for stronger awareness campaigns and community-based interventions to tackle gender-based violence.

The ceremony was chaired by Professor Enobong Ikpeme, while the official unveiling was performed by Most Rev. Christian Ekong, who commended the author for using literature as a platform to address pressing social issues and advocate for a safer, more compassionate society.
