The Director-General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, has urged eligible voters in Osun State to come out en masse and exercise their constitutional right to vote in Saturday’s governorship election without fear or intimidation.
Issa-Onilu, in a statement, assured voters that they have the right to participate freely and peacefully in the electoral process, while urging them to conduct themselves responsibly before, during and after the election.
He warned voters against acts capable of triggering violence, stressing that no political contest was worth the peace and security of the people of Osun State.
The NOA boss also called on political parties, candidates, supporters, community leaders and other stakeholders to put the interest of the state above partisan considerations and ensure that their supporters abide by the rules of the election.
“The election presents an opportunity for the people of Osun State to freely choose their leaders. I therefore urge every eligible voter to come out and vote without fear. Your vote is your voice, and your participation is critical to our democratic process,” he said.
Issa-Onilu further appealed to voters to maintain peace and order at polling units, avoid confrontation and respect the rights of fellow citizens irrespective of political affiliation.
He advised voters to cast their ballots according to their conscience and leave polling units peacefully after voting, while allowing electoral officials to carry out their duties without interference.
The Director-General reminded citizens that any electoral disputes should be resolved through appropriate legal and institutional channels rather than violence or self-help.
He also urged traditional rulers, religious leaders, youth leaders, women’s groups, civil society organisations and other influential stakeholders to intensify their messages of peace, tolerance and responsible citizenship.
Issa-Onilu assured the people of Osun State that the National Orientation Agency, through its structures across the state, remained committed to providing credible civic and voter education while promoting peaceful democratic participation.
He urged the electorate to vote peacefully, respect one another and protect the peace of the state.
“Let us remember that after the election, we will still be neighbours, friends, families and citizens of the same Osun State. Let us therefore choose peace, uphold our democratic values and allow the will of the people to prevail peacefully,” he added.
