The National Orientation Agency (NOA), in collaboration with Junior Chamber International (JCI) Abuja Unity, has intensified efforts to promote road safety and responsible citizenship through the “Road Safety and You” Project.

The initiative, held at the NOA Conference Hall in Abuja, brought together stakeholders from government agencies, road safety and traffic management institutions, the insurance sector, youth groups, community organisations and other relevant sectors.

A statement by Bala Musa, Director, Communication and Media, says the project is in line with NOA’s mandate of citizen education, value reorientation and behavioural change communication, with emphasis on discipline, respect for human life, responsible citizenship and compliance with traffic laws.

Speaking at the programme, the NOA Director, Community Safety Awareness and Compliance, Tessy Nnalue, stressed the need for sustained public enlightenment to tackle unsafe road practices and encourage Nigerians to adopt behaviours capable of preventing avoidable crashes and loss of lives.

The programme featured presentations by representatives of the Nigerian Council of Registered Insurance Brokers (NCRIB), Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO) and Nigeria Police Force (NPF), who provided practical guidance on vehicle insurance, roadworthiness, safe driving and accident prevention.

Participants were sensitized on the importance of regular vehicle maintenance, functional brakes and lights, tyre safety, valid vehicle documentation and strict observance of traffic regulations. They were also warned against dangerous practices such as speeding, distracted driving, reckless overtaking and driving under the influence of alcohol or other substances.

The event further featured a drama presentation, interactive panel discussion and question-and-answer session, providing participants with an opportunity to seek clarification on traffic enforcement, insurance compliance, accident response and the responsibilities of motorists and pedestrians.

The organisers urged participants to become road safety ambassadors by promoting patience, vigilance, mutual respect and responsible behaviour on the roads, while encouraging them to take road safety messages to their homes, workplaces and communities.
