Environmentalists have decried the level of man-made degradation on the ecosystem and called for collective efforts to restore the environment for the health of the people.
They made this position known as the world marks Soil day.
Popular Environmentalist, Dr. Nnimmo Bassey pointed at a healthy environment as one of the keys to a healthy people and economy.
While calling on the Government and the populace to mind their actions and ensure that the environment is given the right treatment, Dr. Bassey stressed that harsh actions against the soil is tantamount to the harsh climate plaguing the people.
Coordinator, Centre for environment, media development Communications, CEMEDEC, Chief Constance Meju decried the impact of environmental degradation on the women and children, calling for a possible redress.
Director, Kebetkache women development and resource centre, Dr. Emem Okon, wants the Multinational to desist from extractions that harm the environment and think of restoring the ecosystem.
World Soil Day (WSD) is held annually on 5 December as a means to focus attention on the importance of healthy soil and to advocate the sustainable management of soil resources.
Theme for this year’s observance is; ” Soil and water: a source of life”.
