WAMASON advocates sustainable plastic management policies

An environmentalist has urged citizens to reduce the use of plastics as they cause pollution to the environment and great danger to mother-earth.

The Chairman, Waste Management Society of Nigeria WAMASON Rivers State, Dr. Williams Iyama speaking on behalf of the Association in commemoration of the World Earth’s Day observance, emphasized that plastic management policies should be set up to check how used plastics are disposed while stressing the need to protect the earth and conserve itnatural resources.

He buttressed the need to move away from fossil fuel dependency to implementing sustainable and renewable energy sources through recycling of wastes which include plastics.

Dr. Iyama recommended that people should take advantage of the opportunity to create wealth from plastic waste products rather than  litter the environment with them especially clogging-up the drainages with it.

He decried the way citizens neglect the responsibility of cleaning the environment, while stating that there should be proper enlightenment and waste management policies prompting people to pay and make money from the wastes they generate.

Another Environmentalist, Mr. Johnny Jacks, while commending the efforts of the Rivers State government on improved waste management, appealed that the recycling measures available should be used to reduce and manage wastes in the state inorder to save the earth from further deterioration.

Mr. Jacks noted that Youths can be meaningfully engaged through house to house waste collection urging government at all levels in Nigeria to mobilize the Youths.

The theme of World Earth Day 2024, is “Planet versus Plastics”, buttressing the need to eliminate plastic wastes and promote sustainable waste management systems.
