NIGER DELTA WOMEN CALL FOR CLEAN UP OF ENVIRONMENT BEFORE DIVESTMENT

Women in the Niger Delta Region have continued to call on the Federal Government and other relevant authorities to stop the planned divestment of Multi-National Companies from their host communities until necessary remediation and compensation is carried out by the companies.

The women who were gathered in Port Harcourt by some Civil Society Organizations within Rivers, Bayelsa and Akwa Ibom States, spoke through their allies, Madam Gladys Osaro of Mba Okase Women, Eleme Local Government Area and Madam Peace Ngbenwa of Okwuzi Community in Onelga Local Government Area of Rivers State, decried the marginalization women suffer as a result of environmental pollution.

Also lending their voice to the course, the Director, Kebetkache Women Development and Resource Centre, Dr. Emem Okon and the Media and Communications Officer of the Group, Mr. Fabian Nsemeke, said they have sent letters to the Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara amongst other measures to drive home their demands.

The coalition wants the Federal Government to disapprove the divestment of oil assets until all polluted farmlands, rivers, air and forests in the Niger Delta Region have been cleaned and restored.
