The Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria MWAN has expressed deep concern and disappointment over the circular issued by the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC) dated 27th June 2025 (Ref: SWC/S/04/S.218/111/646).

According to a statement signed by MWAN national President, Prof. Rosemary Ogu and Secretary, Dr Vetty Agala, the circular is purportedly reviewing allowances for medical and dental officers in the federal civil service.

It states, “MWAN, a professional association of female medical and dental doctors across Nigeria and an affiliate of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), fully aligns with and supports the NMA’s rejection of the circular.

MWAN says it considers the circular inadequate, misleading and a breach of the bargaining agreements (CBAs) reached in 2001, 2009, 2014, and 2021 between the NMA and the Federal Government.

“This unilateral action not only undermines the principles of social dialogue and industrial harmony but also further compounds the critical brain drain and low morale currently plaguing the health sector.

It disrespects the patriotic service of doctors who continue to stay behind and serve under difficult conditions, ” it stated.

“We therefore call for the immediate withdrawal of the circular and demand full implementation of all agreements previously reached, including: Appropriate adjustments in line with CBAs, Payment of outstanding arrears and allowances, Timely release of the 2025 Medical Residency Training Fund (MRTF) and the Enforcement of professional standards in hospital appointments, Urgent reconvening of CBA negotiations to restore trust and industrial peace, ” MWAN demands.

MWAN says it remains committed to a functional and equitable health system where the welfare of practitioners is protected, and the well-being of the Nigerian people is prioritized.

“We stand in solidarity with the NMA and urge the Federal Government to act swiftly and justly to avert avoidable disruption in healthcare delivery.”
