The Opobo Council of Chiefs has formally announced the coronation of His Majesty King Charles Douglas MacPepple Jaja as Jeki VI, Amanyanabo and Treaty King of Opobo Kingdom.
According to the Vice Chairman of Opobo Council of Chiefs, Alabo Princewill N. Wogo Dappa on behalf of the Opobo Council of Chiefs, the grand ceremony will take place on Saturday, September 26, 2026, in Opobo Town. It marks a defining moment for one of the Niger Delta’s most storied traditional institutions, rooted in the legacy of courage, enterprise, diplomacy and leadership established by the legendary King Jaja of Opobo.
Preparations have already included high-level traditional and diplomatic visits. Council representatives called on respected kings, traditional rulers and former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan to strengthen historic ties and extend formal invitations.
The coronation will spotlight Opobo’s rich heritage, culture and institutions while bringing together residents at home and in the diaspora in a show of unity around the throne and the kingdom’s future.
The Council has invited the people of Rivers State, Nigerians, friends of Opobo and the international community to join the celebrations. Media houses have been urged to cover the wider story of Opobo one of resilience, leadership, enterprise and continuity.
Authorities appealed for full cooperation with security, traffic, protocol and coordination arrangements as guests arrive from across Nigeria and beyond.
“On Saturday, September 26, Opobo will witness another defining moment in its history,” the Council stated.
