Property worth millions of naira has been lost in a fire at number 57 Azikiwe Street, Mile 2 Diobu, in Port Harcourt City Local Government Area.
The fire broke out in the early hours of today, Friday, catching many tenants in their sleep and shop owners off guard.
Several shops and residential apartments were completely razed.
An eyewitness said it took the combined efforts of the fire service and some persons in the neighbourhood to control the fire.
He explained that the fire started from the apartment of a tenant who fell asleep while cooking.
Earlier, one of the affected shop owners, Mr. Wisdom Jack, told newsmen that he lost ice block machines valued at over ten million naira.
Evacuations are ongoing at the scene of the fire outbreak, and there are no casualties.
The Rivers State Fire Service personnel have managed to put it out, as police officers from Azikiwe Division, led by the DPO, are also at the scene to stop hoodlums from taking advantage of the situation.
