A Federal High Court in Port Harcourt has adjourned to October 13 a suit filed by the civil society group, Initiative for Freedom, Conflict Prevention and Social Integration, also known as FREECON.
The group wants the court to decide if President Bola Tinubu has the power to transfer the Governor’s role in appointing the chairman and members of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission.
They also want the court to rule on whether Rivers’ Sole Administrator, Rtd Vice Admiral Ibok Ete Ibas, can appoint RSIEC officials to conduct council polls
. At Wednesday’s hearing, the PDP joined the suit after its application was granted by Justice Turaki Mohammed.
Meanwhile, lawyers for the defendants raised a preliminary objection over the court’s jurisdiction. FREECON’s lawyer, Lezina Amegua, confirmed receipt and immediately filed a response.
The case has now been moved to October 13, outside the vacation court.
