
A Professor of Broadcast and Media studies, University of Benin, Professor Comfort Obaje has called on Media professionals to help Nigeria realise their potential through Television.
Professor Obaje made the call while Speaking as a Guest lecturer at an event organized by Edo State Council of Radio Television and Theatre Arts workers Union of Nigeria, Rattawu to celebrate the 2025 World Television Day, held in Benin City, Edo State.
she said despite the advancement in technology that led to profileration of media professionals via Social media, the importance of Television as a medium for authentic information cannot be underestimated.
” Television is a medium we all run to when we are looking for authentic information, agreed there is advancement in technology and we have a different social media in place, which have given opportunities for individuals to now post whatever they want to post, but Television still maintained its position, irrespective of what’s happening in the world today “
Highlighting the functions of Television to include information dissemination, empowerment among others, Professor Obaje stressed that Television as a medium brings to life happenings in different places.
She called on Media owners and stakeholders to prioritise welfare and issues affecting Media workers in the country.
On his part, Chairman, Radio, television and Theatre Arts Workers Union of Nigeria, Edo State Council, Comrade Ralph Ojekere who noted that Television as a medium had helped in shaping public opinion and bridging cultural diverse maintained that Rattawu as a union would continue to engage Government and stakeholders to address the welfare of Media workers.
” Television brings people together by bridging cultural and geographical divide, it also serves as archives, intangible heritage “.
Highlight of the event was questions and answers sessions, Cultural dance and presentation of awards to some invited guests.
