As political activities intensify across Rivers State ahead of party primaries, the Rivers Peace Initiative has warned that the unfolding election cycle carries far-reaching consequences for the state’s peace, stability, and economic fortunes.
In a statement by its Convener, Mr. Obinna Ebogidi, The Rivers Peace Initiative cautioned that the coming weeks will test not only the strength of democratic institutions but also the collective maturity of political actors in Rivers state.
According to the statement, recent months have already exposed the fragility of peace in Rivers, with rising tensions, strained institutions, and eroding public confidence. Citizens, it observed, continue to grapple with poor access to basic services, declining economic opportunities, and deepening uncertainty about the future.
“What happens in the coming weeks will not just determine who becomes candidates, but will shape the tone of public engagement, the level of trust in the electoral process, and the quality of leadership that eventually emerges,” the statement read.
The group placed heavy responsibility on aspirants and political parties to conduct themselves with utmost discipline. It urged aspirants to be honest about their capacity and intentions, while calling on parties to ensure their primaries are credible, transparent, and free of actions that could trigger fresh crises.
The organisation frowned at the growing trend of personality-driven politics, warning against campaigns built on insults, rumours, and provocation.
“Rivers State cannot afford another season dominated by personal attacks and unnecessary brinkmanship. What the people need now is clarity on ideas, priorities, and practical solutions to the real challenges facing them,” the statement emphasised.
Describing the current period as a critical opportunity for reset, the group said the state has endured a difficult season and must not treat the coming elections with levity.
It appealed to all stakeholders, aspirants, political parties, their supporters, and ordinary citizens to exercise restraint, operate strictly within the rules, and place the overall peace and stability of Rivers State above narrow political interests.
“The direction we take now will define not just the outcome of these elections, but the broader trajectory of Rivers State for years to come,” the group warned.
