Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has expressed profound grief over the tragic train accident in Agbor, Ika South Local Government Area, which claimed four lives and left several others injured.

In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, the Governor sympathized with the bereaved families and prayed for the speedy recovery of those receiving treatment for injuries sustained in the incident.

Describing the accident as heartbreaking and unfortunate, Governor Oborevwori said the loss of lives was a painful tragedy for the affected families and the entire state.

He hinted that the state government immediately activated an emergency response by deploying relevant authorities to the scene to provide assistance to victims and coordinate rescue operations.

According to the statement, the Governor directed the Commissioner for Special Duties, alongside the Chairmen of Ika South and Ika North-East Local Government Areas, to proceed to the accident scene and oversee rescue efforts.

Governor Oborevwori also commended security agencies for their prompt intervention, revealing that the Commissioner of Police personally visited the scene and deployed security personnel to protect passengers’ luggage and other valuables.

The statement added that injured victims were quickly evacuated to nearby hospitals for medical attention, survivors without injuries were transported to town, while the remains of the deceased were deposited in the mortuary.

To ease the evacuation process, buses were immediately dispatched to convey survivors and injured passengers from the scene.

Providing an update, the Chairman of Ika North-East Local Government Council, Monday Odigwe, revealed that 35 injured passengers were receiving treatment across three hospitals: 13 at Central Hospital, Agbor; 12 at General Hospital, Owa-Oyibu; and 10 at General Hospital, Owa-Alero.

Odigwe further stated that officials had been assured that efforts would be made to lift the train as soon as possible.

Governor Oborevwori prayed for the peaceful repose of the souls of the deceased and asked God to grant their families the strength to bear the painful loss.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the welfare and safety of residents, assuring that the government would continue to monitor the situation closely and provide the necessary support to victims receiving medical care.
