…Sports Commissioner Commends Governor Umo Eno for Transforming Venue into Safe Recreational Hub
Football enthusiasts in Akwa Ibom are set for a unique and exciting 2026 FIFA World Cup viewing experience as Ibom Plaza transforms into a vibrant fan destination featuring live match screenings, dance competitions, entertainment and attractive giveaways throughout the tournament.
The initiative, tagged “Ibom Plaza World Cup Dance Challenge,” is being organised by Idy Sports Entertainment in collaboration with the Akwa Ibom State Government to create an engaging atmosphere for football lovers and visitors during the global football spectacle to be hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada.
Speaking while receiving a delegation from Idy Sports Entertainment on a working visit to his office, the Commissioner for Sports, Elder Paul Bassey, assured the organisers of the Ministry’s support and described the programme as a timely initiative that will further enliven the state during the tournament.
The Commissioner noted that despite Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the World Cup, interest among football fans remains high, with many supporters already backing other African nations participating in the competition.
He explained that beyond watching matches on giant screens, fans at the Ibom Plaza will enjoy a festival-like atmosphere with dance contests, entertainment activities and opportunities to win various prizes.
“It is unfortunate that Nigeria did not qualify, but that does not diminish the excitement of the World Cup. Many Nigerians have adopted other African countries as their teams, and this initiative adds another layer of excitement because fans will not only watch football but also stand a chance of winning prizes through dance competitions and other activities,” he said.
Elder Bassey commended Governor Umo Eno for the recent remodelling of Ibom Plaza, describing the facility as a befitting and secure venue for a global sporting experience.
According to him, the Governor’s investment in urban renewal and security has made it possible to host large gatherings at the Plaza, even during late-night World Cup fixtures.
Earlier, the Manager of Idy Sports Entertainment, Mr. Charles Ewang, said the programme is designed to blend sports and entertainment while boosting tourism and social activities across the state during the World Cup.
He disclosed that participation in the dance challenge is free, with seven groups expected to qualify for the competition and prizes awarded to the top three performers. Spectators will also have opportunities to win gifts, including branded souvenirs and airtime vouchers.
The World Cup Dance Challenge is scheduled to commence on June 16 at Ibom Plaza.
