…assures continued support for corps members, directs renovation of Okobo school
Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the welfare of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members, assuring that government will continue to provide a conducive environment for corps members serving in the state while rewarding excellence in community service.
Governor Eno gave the assurance while receiving the Akwa Ibom State Coordinator of the NYSC, Mrs. Ngozi Akuagbaogu, who presented an outstanding corps member, Odinakachi Kelechi, in Government House, Uyo.
In recognition of Kelechi’s exceptional Community Development Service (CDS), particularly the renovation of a classroom in his place of primary assignment in Okobo Local Government Area, the Governor announced that the State Government would undertake the complete renovation of the school and directed the Chairman of Okobo Local Government Area, Hon. George Henshaw, to commence the process immediately.
The Governor said the recognition was intended to encourage selfless service and inspire other corps members and young Nigerians to contribute meaningfully to community development. He congratulated Kelechi on earning the NYSC State Honours Award and his nomination for the 2025 Batch ‘B’ Stream I Presidential Honours Award.
Governor Eno also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for granting financial autonomy to local governments, noting that the policy has enhanced grassroots development by increasing resources available for rural infrastructure. He urged chairmen of the 31 local government areas in Akwa Ibom to collaborate with the State Government in expanding development projects across rural communities.
According to the Governor, the state’s model schools and primary healthcare centres provide templates for local government councils willing to partner with the administration to improve the quality of life of rural residents.
Earlier, the Akwa Ibom State Coordinator of the NYSC, Mrs. Ngozi Akuagbaogu, commended Governor Eno for his unwavering support to the Scheme, particularly the upward review of the monthly state allowance for corps members from ₦5,000 to ₦20,000 and the consistency in payment, describing the gesture as a major boost to the morale and welfare of corps members serving in the state.
She highlighted Kelechi’s contributions to community development, including the renovation of a classroom, donation of ten three-seater desks, organisation of anti-cultism sensitisation campaigns for students, and free extra-mural lessons for JSS III and SSS III candidates preparing for external examinations.
The visit featured the presentation of the NYSC State Honours Award Certificate to the distinguished corps member.
