‎The Edo State Council of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), has applauded Governor Monday Okpebholo’s directive to exclude workers in the State Civil and Public Service employed before January 2017 from the Contributory Pension Scheme with immediate effect.


‎ A statement signed by the Acting Secretary, Comrade Ireotoi Kingsley, explained that the development was the product of sustained struggle, advocacy and persistent engagement.

‎It says with the gesture, the affected workers and Pensioners are now to return to the Defined Benefit Scheme, while affected retirees are to enjoy the appropriate pension status applicable to their colleagues under the Nigeria Union of Pensioners.

“This development is the product of the sustained struggle, advocacy and persistent engagement which has finally yielded a historic achievement for affected Edo workers and pensioners employed before January 2017 who were subsequently placed under the CPS are now to return to the DBS, while affected retirees are to enjoy the appropriate pension status applicable to their colleagues under the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP)” he said


‎The statement appreciates the Edo State Government for responding positively to the longstanding demand and expresses the commitment of the Union to defend the rights, welfare and legitimate interests of the workers as well as pensioners.
