…As maiden international flight departs Uyo for Ghana

Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has described the Victor Attah International Airport, Uyo, as a pace setter in Nigeria’s aviation sector, as it commenced international operations with a maiden flight to Ghana.

Speaking at a ceremony to mark the inaugural international flight on May 2, 2026, the Minister said the facility stands out as a unique transit hub with capacity to handle seamless passenger connections across domestic and international routes.

He noted that the airport provides rare connectivity, allowing passengers to transfer from international to international, domestic to international, and vice versa—services he said are not available at any other sub-national airport in the country.

According to Keyamo, the development positions Akwa Ibom State as a growing aviation hub, adding that ongoing infrastructure strides in the state reflect a transformation comparable to global destinations.

“This Airport is not just one of those airports, not just a terminal building, but a world-class transit hub with immense impact.”

“With this facility, passengers are afforded the opportunity of transferring their flights from international to international; domestic to international; and international to domestic,” he explained.

According to the Minister, “This kind of services do not exist in any sub-national anywhere in the country but only here in this airport. This is not just the best, it is the only existing one, a pacesetter, in the country.”

The Minister also highlighted the far-reaching economic impact of the airport, noting that its operations would stimulate commerce, tourism, and regional integration. He commended Governor Umo Eno for his commitment to completing the project and securing its international status.

In his remarks, Governor Eno attributed the milestone to sustained leadership across successive administrations, describing the airport’s development as a “relay of progress” from former governors Victor Attah, Godswill Akpabio, and Udom Emmanuel.

The Governor further commended the Aviation Minister for his role in facilitating the airport’s upgrade to international standards.
