The member representing Orhionmwon East in Edo State House of Assembly, Mr Osamwonyi Atu has been elected the deputy speaker of the House following the resignation of the former deputy speaker, Mrs Maria Edeko.

His emergence followed a nomination by the member representing Akoko-Edo One Constituency, Prince Yekini Idaiye and seconded by the member representing Uhunmwode Constituency, Mr Kaycee Osamwonyi.

In his acceptance speech, the new Deputy Speaker thanked the house for the unanimous support and promised not to disappoint the trust reposed in him.

Meanwhile, the former deputy speaker who voluntarily resigned her position said she did so because of the minority status of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in the Assembly.Mrs Edeko further stated that her resignation would allow for justice, fairness, and equity for all the constituencies to be adequately represented in governance.

She thanked the leaders and members of the PDP for finding her worthy to represent her constituency in the assembly.Lawmakers in the House took turns to praise Mrs Edeko following the announcement of her resignation.They appreciated her unwavering dedication, passion for public service, and the high level of integrity she consistently demonstrated throughout her tenure.

On the other hand, the Majority Leader of the House, Mr. Jonathan Aigbokhan moved that all the entitlements due to the office of the deputy speaker be accorded to the former deputy speaker, and the motion which was seconded by the minority leader of the House, Mr Charity Airobarueghian was adopted by the House in a voice vote.
