The Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Rivers State Command has rolled out a large-scale special patrol operation ahead of the 2025 Christmas and New Year celebrations.

The Command says over 1019 personnel, 15 patrol vehicles, 1 heavy-duty tow truck, and about 400 Special Marshals have been deployed across the state to ensure safety on major highways.

This was disclosed in Port Harcourt by the Sector Public Education Officer of the Command, Chief Route Commander Doris Ebor.

According to her, the special operation, which commenced on Monday, December 15, will run until January 15, 2025, and is aimed at guaranteeing a safe and hitch-free Yuletide season for residents and visitors in Rivers State.

She explained that traffic control would be intensified at identified congestion points and accident-prone areas to ensure free flow of traffic throughout the festive period.

Chief Route Commander Ebor also revealed that a Situation Room has been activated at the FRSC State Headquarters to monitor road activities in real time. The unit will coordinate information sharing and ensure rapid response to emergencies across the state.

The Corps noted that enforcement during the operation will focus on offences such as distracted and dangerous driving, over-speeding, road obstructions, overloading, and violations of seatbelt and child restraint laws. Other targeted offences include the use of mechanically unfit vehicles, absence of passenger manifests, and failure to comply with vehicle safety standards.

She added that unit commanders have been directed to collaborate with security and emergency agencies, including the military, the Nigeria Police Force, the DSS, NSCDC, and the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing, among others.

Additional partners include NEMA, state traffic agencies, emergency rescue services, ambulance providers, the Federal Road Maintenance Agency, and the Federal Fire Service.

The FRSC has therefore urged motorists to obey traffic rules and drive responsibly to ensure a safe festive season for all road users in Rivers State.
