The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has strongly condemned the alleged ethnically charged conduct of police officers captured in a viral video, describing their actions as a direct affront to Nigeria’s values of unity, fairness and respect for human dignity.
In a statement signed by the Director of Communication and Media, Bala Musa, the Agency expressed grave concern over footage showing officers at a checkpoint allegedly demanding gratification from a motorist after searching his vehicle. Even more troubling, the NOA noted, was the reported remark by one of the officers that he would have slapped the motorist “if he was an Igbo.”
The Agency said such behaviour is unacceptable and runs contrary to the ideals of the Nigerian Identity Project and the National Values Charter, which promote national unity, equity, patriotism and equal respect for every Nigerian, regardless of ethnic origin, religion or political affiliation.
The NOA stressed that no citizen should be subjected to intimidation, discrimination or humiliation because of their ethnicity, warning that such actions threaten the country’s social cohesion and shared national identity.
Commending the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force for its swift intervention, the Agency praised the immediate arrest of the officers involved and the commencement of disciplinary proceedings, describing the response as a demonstration of the Force’s commitment to professionalism, accountability and ethical policing.
It expressed confidence that any officer found culpable would face appropriate sanctions in line with the law and established disciplinary procedures.
The Agency also urged the Police hierarchy to sustain ongoing reforms by identifying and removing personnel whose misconduct undermines public confidence in the Force, while acknowledging the thousands of disciplined and professional officers who continue to serve the nation with distinction both at home and in international peacekeeping operations.
Reaffirming its mandate to promote national values and social cohesion, the NOA called on Nigerians to reject ethnic profiling and divisive narratives, insisting that the country’s diversity remains one of its greatest strengths.
The Agency urged citizens across ethnic, religious and political divides to embrace peaceful coexistence, uphold mutual respect and remain committed to building a united, peaceful and prosperous Nigeria.
