A former Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters and reverred community leader, Dr. Sam Amadi has declared that the NYSC Health Initiative for Rural Dwellers (HIRD) is a key initiative of the Scheme which is making a “monumental impact” on the lives of ordinary people in communities across Nigeria, especially those who on their own, cannot afford to pay for treatment in hospitals.

He made this declaration today in his community, Oro-Obaziolu, Npolu, Oroworukwo, during the NYSC first quarter HIRD outreach staged in the community.

Dr. Ejekwu expressed immense gratitude to the NYSC management and Corps Members for accepting to partner him to provide massive free medical outreach to the people of his community.

He expressed the hope that the outreach will improve the lives and well-being of his community and thereby increase their lifespan.

In an address, the State Coordinator NYSC Rivers State, Mr. Moses Oleghe, on behalf of the DG NYSC, Brig-Gen OO Nafiu, had described the HIRD outreach as a “key initiative of the Scheme which has brought her “increased visibility, recognition and relevance amongst Nigerians.”

He appreciated immensely the “financial and logistics” support received from Dr. Sam Soni Ejekwu towards the successful hosting of the outreach in Oro-Obaziolu, Nkpolu, Oroworukwo.

Mr. Oleghe used the occasion to implore eminent citizens to partner the NYSC Scheme in bringing quality free healthcare delivery services to the people of their communities through the veritable vehicle of the HIRD.

Over 300 members of the community benefitted from today’s outreach, which is the first for 2026 in the State.

Areas covered by the outreach include dental and eye care, general medical services, laboratory tests, doctor’s consultation, dispensation of drugs, and counseling.

Equally, there was sensitization on malaria, diabetes, hypertension, and drug abuse.
