Defending champion of the 2022 National Sports Festival, Delta State, has received the Unity Torch for the forthcoming edition of the festival slated for Abeokuta, Ogun State from the 16th to 30th May, 2025.

The Unity Torch team arrived Asaba in a colourful manner with spectacular performances, and was received by Delta Contingent, and thereafter the Unity Torch was received by Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori who was represented on the occasion by the State Deputy Governor, Sir Monday Onyeme.

Governor Oborevwori said the arrival of the Unity Torch further reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering commitment to sports as a vital instrument for youth empowerment , social inclusion and development.”

”This symbolic torch is more than just an herald of another edition of our nation’s foremost multi purpose sports event. It stands as a glowing emblem of unity, peace, national integration and enduring spirit of sportsmanship that binds us togeyad Nigerians.”

”Delta State has consistently remained at the forefront of sporting excellence in Nigeria. We are immensely proud of our legacy hosting and triumphantly winning the 2022 edition of the National Sports Festival ”.


Team Leader of the Unity Torch and Representative of the National Sports Commission, Mrs Ikanah Bora, said President Bola Tinubu had flagged off the National Sports Festival Unity Torch in Abuja on the 25th March, 2025 with a mandate to the National Sports Commission to take the unity torch round the thirty six states and the Federal Capital Territory, and also to preach unity , saying that sports is a unifying factor.

”We have taken the unity torch to almost all the states. We have been to the states in North West, North Central, North East, South East and we are currently in the South South. We have been to Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Bayelsa, and we are here in Delta. So, from here, we move to Edo tomorrow, by the grace of God; and the train is running down towards the South West and the game venue, Abeokuta in Ogun State ”

She pleaded that Delta State Governor should help in creating more awareness about the forthcoming National Sports Festival and to continue to invest in the youths, saying that Delta is doing well in sports as the defending champions.

Chairman of Delta State Sports Commission, Onoriode Oborevwori said the state as the defending champion of the festival is fully prepared .

”As we get ready for the National Sports Festival often called Nigeria’s own Olympics Games, we in Delta State are fully prepared ”
”We are happy to receive the Unity Torch which represents peace, unity and true spirit of sportsmanship. It reminds us that through sports, we can come together as one people no matter our differences in culture, background and language ”
