As Nigeria joins the rest of the world to mark 2026 World Maritime day, Stakeholders in Akwa Ibom State has called for the establishment of Ministry of Blue Economy to carter for the regulation and implementation of policies in the Maritime sector in the state.
Speaking during an event organised by the energy and Maritime reporters of Nigeria, Akwa Ibom State Chapter, the port officer, Nigerian, ports economic regulatory agency, Akwa Ibom State, Mrs Molly Asanga alongside private ship owner, Captain Edet Archibong emphasised that establishing the ministry of blue economy as well as building jetty in the state will not only enhance the economy of the state but will improve the livelihood of the people.
Captain Edet Archibong added that if the government could assist in establishing mortgage banks and buying fishing tools for fisherman it will boost the maritime sector.
Explaining the International Maritime organisation (IMO) theme ” from policy to practice: powering maritime excellence and the Akwa Ibom State theme for the celebration, Unlocking Akwa Ibom’s Maritime and Blue Economy potential through effective policy implementation local content participation and strategy partnerships, the keynote speaker Mr Idongesit Anting and the Chairman on the occasion, Mr Asuquo Obon called on the media to wake-up to it’s responsibility in reporting facts, interrogate the process in the maritime sector.
Earlier the State Chairman, energy and Maritime reporters of Nigeria, Akwa Ibom State Chapter, Comr. Harrison Ndifreke noted that the day provides journalists the opportunity to recognise the important role of the private sector, Government agencies, maritime professionals, investors and host communities in building a stronger maritime economy.
“As journalists and maritime reporters, our responsibility goes beyond reporting events. We must help deepen public understanding of the maritime sector, amplify opportunities, report developments accurately, hold stakeholders accountable and ensure that issues affecting communities and industry receive the attention they deserve”
Other stakeholders who made submissions at the gathering include, the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ Akwa Ibom State Council, Member representing Ibiono Ibom state constituency, Senior Special Assistant to Akwa Ibom State governor on local Media, Comrade Amos Etuk amongst others.
