
The Academic staff Union of Secondary schools, ASUSS, Edo State Chapter wants Teachers to strengthen collaboration at every level so they can raise a generation of responsible and capable leaders.

Comrade Aighomwanhi idubor stated this at event organised by the Union to mark this year’s World Teachers Day held in Benin City, the Edo State Capital.
Comrade Idubor who noted that the importance of collaboration with relevant stakeholders to strengthen Education cannot be underestimated, appealed to the Edo State Government to recruit more Teachers as it will go along way in improving Teaching and Learning in the state.

” Edo State is in dire need of more Teachers. While we commend for steps taken so far in employment, there is urgent need to employ more hands to bridge the gap”.
The Edo State ASUSS Chairman who appealed for the urgent provisions of subvention to schools to enable them function properly without placing undue burdens on principals and parents urged the state Government to address inter-cadre Waiver for teachers.
” Over sixteen letter’s have been written to His Excellency through the Honourable Commissioner for Education on the grant of inter-cadre Waiver. To this day we are still expectant of a response.”
Comrade Idubor further appealed for the promotion of Teachers in the state.
“Since July 2023, Teachers Promotions have been due. We have written eighteen letters appealing for action. Yet Teachers continue to wait patiently.”
Responding, Representative of the Honourable Commissioner Commissioner for Education and Chairman of Secondary schools Education Board, Dr Maureen Ekhoragbon said Governor Monday Okpebholo’s administration was committed in addressing the plights of Teachers in the state.
Meanwhile, The Edo State Government is to employ four thousand five hundred teachers to strengthen the state’s education sector.
The state Commissioner for Education, Dr Paddy Iyamu, made this known in Benin City, while addressing teachers on the occasion of the 2025 World Teachers’ Day celebration organised by the Nigeria Union of Teachers, Edo State Wing.
He stated that the presentation of appointment letters to the new teachers would hold this October, 2025.
According to the commissioner, the move reflected Governor Monday Okpebholo’s commitment to addressing teacher shortages, especially in public primary and secondary schools.
“Come October 15, we are going to present letters of appointment to about four thousand EdoStar volunteer teachers who have been teaching for the past three years. Besides, the EdoStar, the government will recruit another five hundred teachers into the system,” Iyamu stated.
He also disclosed that the state had built over sixty eight schools in less than one year and trained more than six thousand teachers in digital and technical skills.
He said the teachers were trained on robotics and artificial intelligence, to enhance classroom delivery.
The commissioner added that the state government would from 2026 institutionalize every October 4 as Teachers’s Fitness Day to promote teachers’ well-being
In his address, Edo State chairman, Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT, comrade Bernard Ajobiewe observed that the theme of this year’s World Teachers Day, ‘Recasting Teaching as a Collaborative Profession,’ is a key reminder that the future of Nigeria rest on teachers because they educate, inspire and sharpen the minds of pupils, which are refer to as leaders of tomorrow.
While appreciating the Edo State governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, on his achievements so far in the state, the Edo NUT chairman called on him to urgently implement the financial benefits of teachers promotions and accrued arrears, recruit qualified teachers to fill current vacancies and include NUT leadership in SUBEB as board member in line with UBEC law, among others.
The Edo NUT expressed displeasure over the return of schools to missionaries in the state, and appeal to government to take a second look into the issue.
In a lecture entitled “Recasting Teaching as a Collaborative Profession,” the guest lecturer, comrade Joe Iyalekhue observed that teaching in the 21st century is too complex to be carried out alone.
He pointed out that collaboration is the foundation of effective and sustainable teaching, as it will empower teachers to learn from one another, enrich student experiences, and build stronger schools
