The officers and soldiers of Headquarters 6 Division Nigerian Army have been charged to exercise discipline, professionalism and responsibility in their use of social media.
The General Officer Commanding (GOC) 6 Division Nigerian Army and Land Component Commander, Joint Task Force (South-South), Operation DELTA SAFE, Major General Emmanuel Emekah, gave the charge while declaring open the Third Quarter Social Media Awareness Lecture for 2026 held at the Lieutenant General Faruk Yahaya Badminton Court Port Harcourt Barracks, Rivers State.
Major General Emekah stated that the lecture was organised to educate personnel on the provisions of the Armed Forces of Nigeria Social Media Policy 2018, with particular emphasis on social media violations and the implications of non-compliance.
He noted that despite the existing policy, instances of misuse of social media by military personnel still occur, posing serious security risks to military operations and national security.
According to the GOC, the awareness lecture is aimed at reinforcing the culture of responsible social media usage, reducing breaches of the policy to the barest minimum and preventing the leakage of classified and sensitive military information through digital platforms.
He stressed that every soldier has a responsibility to safeguard operational information and uphold the image and integrity of the Nigerian Army both online and offline.
Major General Emekah commended the Commander, Nigerian Army Cyber Warfare Command, Major General Emmanuel Mustafa, for finding time to visit the Division to enlighten officers and soldiers on the dangers associated with the misuse of social media.
He expressed confidence that the lecture would further strengthen personnel’s understanding of cyber security and responsible digital conduct.
