The Federal Government has reassured Nigerians that the ongoing tax reforms are designed to promote fairness, foster economic growth, and improve public service delivery, rather than to punish citizens.

Speaking at the March 2026 general meeting of the Association of Heads of Federal Establishments (AHFE), Mrs. Peace Williams of the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) said that while the reforms have generated debate, particularly on social media, their primary objective is to protect low-income earners while ensuring that high-income individuals and businesses pay their fair share of taxes.

Under the new structure, Mrs. Williams explained, the first ₦800,000 of annual income for first-time earners is exempt from taxation, with only income above this threshold subject to tax.

She further noted that the government is working to widen the tax net, targeting tax evaders and improving compliance across both formal and informal sectors.

Key reforms include updates to tax administration laws and the introduction of improved systems to enhance transparency and efficiency in tax collection.

Mrs. Williams emphasized that the reforms are critical to building a self-reliant economy and enhancing infrastructure and social services.

She urged Nigerians to verify information through official channels and support efforts to strengthen the nation’s tax system.
