Edo State Wing of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT, says the Union was against the policy of the State Government to return some public primary and secondary schools in the state to missionaries.
Chairman, Nigeria Union of Teachers, Edo State Wing, Comrade Bernard Ajobiewe stated this in an interview with Radio Nigeria in Benin city, the Edo State Capital while commenting on the heels of this year’s 2025 World Teachers Day .
The Edo NUT Chairman explained that the State Government policy of returning some public primary and Secondary schools in the state to missionaries will deprive thousands of children in the state access to Education .
“The NUT as a body , we are holistically against handing of schools to Missionaries because it shows that government is trying to shine away from their responsibility because the National policy of Education says that an average child should be able to have a quality accessible Education, for handing over of school to missionaries it shows that some average children who are vulnerable will be denied access to Education as they may not be able to pay the high fees that will be imposed by the missionaries organisations, we therefore advised the Edo State Government to reverse her decision “
Comrade Ajobiewe noted that the state Government policy of returning some public primary and secondary schools to Missionaries will also affect the fate of Teachers in those schools.
” The Teachers who are teaching in such schools, were will they go? So It’s an agreement that’s supposed to be reached at the high class stakeholders meeting, were every stakeholder will make an input
Before such decisions can be reached on the part of the children and on the part of the Teachers, so we have advised the Government to reverse the decision until the major stakeholders are seated to review such decisions “.
He appreciated the Edo State Government for the implementation of sixty five and forty years of service for teachers and appealed for the prompt payment of public primary school Teachers Salaries in the state to latest the 28th of every month.
” We appealed to the Edo State Government to please assist to ensure that public Primary school Teachers in the state receive their salaries between 27th and 28th of every month “.
