The threat by President Donald Trump to invade Nigeria with American troops over insecurity and alleged killing of Christians, has been described as un-necessary and against International Conventions.
Reacting to the threat, State Director of National Orientation Agency NOA in Rivers State, Dr. Edward Banigo, noted that it will be wrong for any country to invade a sovereign nation like Nigeria without recourse to international resolutions.
According to Dr. Banigo, the United States of America can report anything it considered abnormal about Nigeria to the United Nations, instead of threatening invasion.
Banigo said, “We are operating an international system under the United Nations. If America is talking about genocide or whatever it is, there is an international arena, an international platform, through which their concerns could be raised. And that is the United Nations. No nation has that power, that right, under international laws to invade another nation. If you have any concern, the Security Council of the UN is there to deal with such matters. So I think perhaps America is just overreaching itself by making the statement that they are going to send troops.”
“While noting that the Federal Government has been taking measures to address insecurity in the country, Dr. Banigo who emphasized that killing in the country has not been sectional, however said the American threat should serve as a wake-up call for government to do more in tackling insecurity in the country.
He said “Inasmuch as it is wrong for America to threaten violence on Nigeria, I want to say that it is also a wake-up call for all of us in this country. It is a wake-up call for the federal government, state government, even local government and indeed the citizens of this country that we will need to do more to protect lives and property. So I want to call on the Federal government, the military, the security agencies to do more. Yes, we commend their efforts, but they say the largest room in the world is the room for improvement. There is room for improvement.”
Dr, Banigo, who urged the Federal government to dialogue with America, also appealed to political and religious leaders, and the entire citizens, to promote and encourage every effort geared towards entrenching peace in the nation.
