The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, in Akwa Ibom State has reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, neutrality, and strict adherence to the Electoral Act ahead of forthcoming electoral activities in the state.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner, Prof. Anugbum Onuoha, gave the assurance while addressing journalists at the Commission’s State office in Uyo.
Professor Onuoha described the media as a critical stakeholder in the electoral process, emphasizing that professional journalism remains essential to credible elections and democratic consolidation.
According to him, the role of journalists in voter education, election monitoring, public enlightenment, and factual reportage contributes significantly to strengthening transparency and public trust in the electoral system.
“INEC cannot succeed without a professional, responsible, and factual media partnership,” he stated.

The REC assured journalists and other stakeholders that the Commission remains open to engagement, clarification, and collaboration within the framework of its constitutional responsibilities and operational guidelines.
He stressed that INEC in the state would continue to conduct its activities in line with established laws and procedures, maintaining impartiality in the discharge of its duties.
Professor Onuoha also called on media practitioners to uphold the ethics of journalism by ensuring accuracy, fairness, balance, and responsible reporting, especially as political activities begin to gather momentum ahead of future elections.
The renewed partnership between INEC and the media is expected to enhance public confidence in the electoral process, promote voter awareness, and help curb misinformation capable of undermining democratic stability.
The engagement further underscored the importance of collaboration among key stakeholders in sustaining peaceful, credible, and inclusive elections in Akwa Ibom State.
