The Federal Government has been called upon to channel more resources towards improving the economy rather than just increasing salaries and meeting the other twenty-point demand made by the organised Labour.
Making this call during our live interaction program Democratic platform the Secretary of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, ASUP, Captain Elechi Amadi Polytechnic, Dr. Emmanuel Nweke, said the organized Labour unions should consider encouraging investments in key sectors such as agriculture, rather than solely focusing on salary increments.
He said “it is in the right direction we also need to look at other aspects of asking for high rise or better pay we should be looking at real economy if we have economy that is robust we are going to spend less, because even if government increases the salaries of workers it’s going to be eaten up by inflation. So we need to look at the aspect of asking the government or other employers to create jobs or encourage investment you will find out that the burden on workers will lessen”.
By addressing the broader economic challenges and promoting investments, Dr. Onyeka believes that labour unions can achieve more sustainable benefits for workers and the nation as a whole.
Dr. Nweke commended the Nigeria Labour Congress, for their people oriented policies further urged them to prioritize staff safety, evaluation and training to enhance their capabilities.
“Labour is talking about security so we are talking about the Labour that is Nigerian focus, I’ve not seen Labour talk about themselves alone everything about Labour is public oriented. What am trying to say is that Labour as it is presently is the voice of the voiceless of so many Nigerians who needs to be heard so Labour should be commended” he noted .
Some callers on the program agreed with Dr. Onyeka’s opinions on Government improving the economy and they urged the organized labour to consider advocating for a unified approach to addressing the nation’s economic challenges.
