Portuguese and Liverpool forward Diogo Jota has died after a car conveying him crashed in northern Spain just two weeks since he married his childhood sweetheart.
According to Spanish state-owned TV, citing local firefighters, the player was believed to have been travelling with his brother Andre who is also a footballer when the accident happened at around 12.40am local time.
A statement by Liverpool Football Club confirmed the sad incident.
Jota, who married his partner Rute Cardoso in Porto two weeks ago, crashed in the province of Zamora while traveling towards Benavente when the car left the road and caught fire on the A-52 which is a key route taken by drivers leaving northern Portugal.
The car, a Lamborghini, left the road due to a tyre blow out while overtaking another before going ablaze.
Diogo Jota aged 28 had signed for Liverpool Football Club in September 2020 from Wolverhampton Wanderers for a fee of more than 40 million pounds sterling and his brother, Andre, aged 26, played for Pennafiel, a Portuguese second division club.
